Carleton University Television, CUTV, has been offering credit courses to students on-campus and those at a distance on television and by videotape (now DVD) for thirty years. Now in year three, CUTV also offers all its courses to students by Streaming Video through its Video-on-Demand service. In 2008, Carleton University wanted to enhance student's learning experience by allowing students to create their own, personalized, online lecture highlight reels of classroom lecture video.
Using Carleton University VideoNotes, powered by Gotuit, students can:"VideoNotes has the potential to really add value to our existing services. Students have the ability to highlight their course lecture videos for review the same way they would use a highlighter to mark portions of their textbooks and written notes." said Jeff Cohen, Manager, CUTV, Carleton University.
All the metadata created by the students is searchable by the community, allowing all to search inside the lectures to particular segments or topics of interest. Additionally, the original, full-length lecture videos are never altered or edited in any way, which allows Carleton to easily scale VideoNotes for additional classes and lectures.
By letting students define the key lecture topics, then find the precise topic or concept they are interested in reviewing, Carleton University greatly expands the educational experience and demonstrates how educational institutions can unleash the power of video to help students realize their full potential.
